Because of this, we have to take the server offline at the end of March 2012.

means they're planning to charge fees for playing S2 on-line.
I don't know when the contract of hiring the servers expires; but I do know Ascaron had to pay 45K a month to rent them.

However, all this speculation about MMO's or payed servers is just useless. (But it does add to post-count; isn't it Stevie?) All we can do is wait until we get some news.

I do not think they are going to charge for S2 MP, but that might be paving the way for access fees to play S3 MP (if that ever materializes).

It could, or it could mean that they're going to a peer to peer model (ala Titan Quest & Open net), or something else. *shrugs* As you say, we're not going to know until DS tell us.

Call me a pessimist (which I am), but the official statement could also mean
- the end of online gaming (and possibliy support) for S2 at the end of the month
- S3 (or whatever is supposed to happen in what DS consider to be the Sacred universe) in an indeterminate future.

(not that I care all that much. I never played S2, and S1 is a nice memory from my gaming past).
